Course Description

This course, taught by certified trainer & radiographer Walt Cofer, is intended as initial or refresher training for individuals pursuing industrial radiographer radiation safety certification, and for anyone interested in understanding the basic principles and applications of industrial radiation safety.

The course addresses required training topics for radiographic personnel specified in U.S. NRC (10 CFR 34.43) and equivalent state radiation control regulations.  Completion of the course addresses the 40-hr. training prerequisite for radiography certification exams by combining 28 hours of online training with 12 hours of hands on training, and training on O&E procedures, radiographic equipment and applicable state regulations.

The course provides an understanding of the basic principles and fundamentals of radiation safety applicable to industrial radiography.  Learning outcomes are assessed at the end of each lesson and a comprehensive 100-question multiple-choice final exam.  The course concludes with a 100-question exam.  The student must receive a passing score of 70% to be considered prepared for the formal exam from a certifying entity.

This Training:

  • Is required for individuals seeking certification as an industrial radiographer.
  • Can be used to satisfy training requirements for radiographic personnel established by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Agreement States and has been approved by the following certifying states:
    • Alabama
    • Illinois
    • Louisiana
    • Texas
    • Georgia
    • Iowa
    • Maine
  • Conforms to guidance for radiographer radiation safety training specified:
    • App. A to ASNT CP-105-2011 (excluding neutron radiography)
    • U.S. NRC NUREG-1556, Vol. II
    • Part E of Suggested State Regulations (Conf. of Radiation Control Program Directors’ model ind. radiography rules)
    • Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission Regulatory Guide G-229
    • IAEA Safety Guide No. SSG-11
    • IAEA TEC-DOC-628
  • Includes lesson summaries and glossaries designed to help students study and pass radiographer certification exams.
  • Includes a training certificate issued upon successful completion of the course.

The training is divided into 12 lessons:

  1. Atomic Structure and Types of Radiation
  2. Radiation Properties and Interactions with Matter
  3. Radiation Units and Terminology
  4. Sources of Ionizing Radiation
  5. Biological Effects of Ionizing Radiation
  6. Radiation Measurement and Instrumentation
  7. Protection Against Ionizing Radiation
  8. Radiation Control Regulations
  9. Radioactive Material Transportation Regulations
  10. Radiographic Equipment (X-ray and Isotope)
  11. Radiation Safety Programs and Procedures
  12. Case Histories of Radiography Incidents

Notes

Recommend Reading assignments are provided for each lesson, which are listed at the beginning of the course.  Completion of the readings and self-study is strongly encouraged and will add to the overall training benefit and time to be credited.  It will also better prepare the student for the practical/hands-on session. It is recommended that the student keep a log of self-study time. It is also recommended that the applicable RSO be involved and confirm that the reading and self-study assignments have been completed.  This should become a part of the student’s training records, which may become part of a radiographer certification exam application.

No-cost assistance is available from the course instructor to RSOs to revise their training programs to add the course as a training option, and with obtaining regulatory approvals.
